“We are seeing more business shifts to Wi-Fi 6 than we had predicted,” Nightingale told CNET. “Actually, we have to start making it sooner than we intended.”

Manufacturers show that Wi-Fi 6 seems strong on the consumer side. Especially now the flagship smart phones from Apple and Samsung have entered the market with full support for new standards.

“We see that reflected in the review of our product portfolio for Wi-Fi 6,” a Netgear spokeswoman told me. “There are lots of people who say, ‘Hey, I bought a Netgear Nighthawk router because I have an iPhone 11.'”

For this reason, 2019 sees the first results of a Wi-Fi 6 router circulating on the market. Along with the Netgear Nighthawk range, which includes fast top-of-the-line models, such as TP-Link, Asus and Ubiquiti.

Most are worth hundreds of dollars, although TP-Link also introduces a new entry-level 6 Wi-Fi line up with prices starting at $ 70.

A mesh router system that uses many devices to send fast Wi-Fi signals throughout the house was first launched on the market several years ago. That’s very interesting, but the system is expensive, usually worth at least $ 300.

That changed in 2019. With the increase in smart home gadgets that increases demand for reliable home-wide Wi-Fi, experts have begun to project significant growth in the mesh category.

Big names all enter, perfect their systems or introduce new ones to catch the incoming waves. In most cases, that means lowering prices.

Amazon, for example, moved to acquire Eero, a network pioneer. A few months later, the company announced a new version of the popular three-piece mesh router for $ 249 – half the cost of the previous generation Eero that came before it.

Google, meanwhile, released Nest Wifi, which offers a better design, faster speed and better value than the original Google Wifi system it replaced.

The best value of all comes from Netgear, which released a new dual-band version of the two-part Orbi mesh system that costs only $ 129. In comparison, the original Tri-band Orbi system costs $ 400.

All three systems were tested well. And in the real world speed test, making it a very tempting time to buy with mesh. If the market is prioritized, then the industry seems to have a good position to be capitalized.

But from Google and Amazon say, the three systems do not yet support Wi-Fi 6. Both Google and Amazon state that it is still too early for new standards to make a lot of difference in people’s homes, and shows the fact that the average internet speed in the US only represents a fraction of the capabilities of Wi-Fi devices 6.

At Amazon, Eero founder Nick Weaver reiterated the company’s focus on performance, reliability and price, the latter seeming to be a major highpoint in relation to Wi-Fi 6.

He said that he was able to find a number of new mesh systems that support Wi-Fi 6, including products such as Linksys Velop, mAX Arris SURFboard, Asus RT-AX92U and a new, more sophisticated version of Netgear Orbi.

Nothing is cheap. Arris and Asus will each sell a two-piece system for between $ 300 and $ 500, while the Linksys and Netgear systems cost $ 700 each.

As more and more people want to buy with mesh, Amazon and Google seem to make clear bets that they will shop at prices more than specifications.

Full speed ahead?

Internet speed is inching up in the US, and it seems that wireless network hardware is currently in a good position to make full use of it.
